Planning a trip to Lake Havasu? This town may be best known for Spring Break, summer vacations, and hot sunny weather perfect for water sports, but it's also a great place for a winter getaway.
If the cold weather and post-holiday blues have you ready to plan a little getaway, here's what you can do in Lake Havasu in the winter.
Weather in Lake Havasu During the Winter Months
First, it's important to note that Lake Havasu is an ideal place to visit during the winter because even our coldest months are quite mild. No extreme heat means you can fully enjoy outdoor activities without overheating, but you won't be too cold, either. We average less than an inch of rain each winter, and daytime temps are usually in the 60s and 70s. Even at night, it's rarely below 40 degrees.
This all means you can explore any of the sights or enjoy outdoor recreation without dealing with extreme temperatures or weather-related cancelled plans.
Hiking and Exploring
Winter is the perfect time to hit the trails in Lake Havasu. The cooler temperatures make hiking much more enjoyable, and the scenic desert landscapes are even more stunning this time of year.
These are a few of our favorite spots:
- SARA Park Trailhead – Home to the beautiful Crack in the Mountain Trail, a must-see slot canyon hike.
- Tabletop Trail – Offers breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding mountains. The hike is moderately challenging, but the reward is well worth it.
- Havasu National Wildlife Refuge – A great spot for birdwatching and light hiking. If you have mobility limitations or young kids with you, this is a great place to explore without any challenging trails to navigate.
Off-Roading Adventures
Lake Havasu is known as one of the best places to go off-roading, with miles and miles of exciting trails to traverse. You will quickly see why Lake Havasu is an off-roader’s paradise, and winter is the best time to explore the endless desert trails. Whether you’re into ATVs, UTVs, or dirt bikes, there are miles of rugged terrain to discover.
These are some popular spots for off-roading:
- Standard Wash OHV Area – Known for its scenic desert landscapes and thrilling terrain. This is an unrestricted public playground that even the most experienced off-roaders will find exciting.
- The Desert Bar – A must-visit off-grid bar, only accessible by dirt roads, offering food, drinks, and live music. They are only open October-April, so your winter trip is the perfect time to visit.
- Havasu's Sand Dunes – Perfect for an adrenaline-pumping ride through rolling dunes.
Fishing and Boating
Just because summer is over doesn’t mean you can’t get out on the water! Lake Havasu’s winter weather is still ideal for boating, kayaking, and fishing. The lake is home to largemouth and smallmouth bass, catfish, and striped bass, making it a great destination for anglers. Plus, with fewer boats on the water, you’ll have a more peaceful and enjoyable experience.
Golfing with a View
Golfing in Lake Havasu during winter is a dream. The cooler temperatures and scenic backdrops make it one of the best times of year to hit the greens.
Check out one of these top golf courses:
- Bridgewater Links – A beautiful course with stunning views of the London Bridge.
- The Courses at Lake Havasu Golf Club – Previously known as London Bridge Golf Club, this course offers two challenging courses surrounded by scenic desert beauty.
Exploring Downtown Lake Havasu and London Bridge
This is the perfect time of year to stroll around downtown or explore near the London Bridge (yes, that London Bridge!).
One of the most famous landmarks in Lake Havasu is the London Bridge, which was relocated from England in the 1960s. Winter is a fantastic time to explore the charming English Village, filled with shops, restaurants, and walking paths along the waterfront.
After sightseeing, enjoy some of the city’s best dining spots, like Barley Brothers Brewery, Shugrue’s Restaurant, or Cha-Bones for an upscale dinner.
